Jack The Giant Slayer

Released : 22 MARCH 2013

Jack is a seemingly unremarkable farm boy, with no royal blood, and just a small cottage to his name. Legend has it that Erik, an ancient king who fought off other-worldly giants, did so by controlling the giants with a magical crown. From childhood, young Jack is enticed by this legend, as is young Princess Isabelle of Cloister, the daughter of King Brahmwell who lives nearby.

Years later, a grown-up Jack goes to town seeking funds to support his uncle’s farm. He hopes to sell his horse. Whilst in town, Jack’s fondness for Princess Isabelle is ignited when he defends her from a group of attackers. A monk offers Jack some magic beans for his horse; these beans have been stolen from Lord Roderick. Isabelle’s father, King Brahmwell, wants her to marry Lord Roderick – which conflicts with Isabelle’s desire to be free and explore the kingdom. As Isabelle argues with her father, Jack argues with his uncle who disapproves of his foolish decision to accept the beans. Jack casts the beans to the ground and leaves the house.

Isabelle, who has left the castle only to be caught in the rain, finds shelter in Jack’s house. However, as it rains, one of the beans flourishes into a huge beanstalk which transports the house, with Isabelle inside, into the sky – to the realm where the giants are feared to dwell.

Jack, and some of the king’s men – including Roderick – seek to rescue Isabelle by climbing the beanstalk. Lord Roderick, amongst the rescue party, believes in the legend of the giants and is planning to use them in his treacherous scheme to marry Isabelle and rule Cloister. He has previously stolen the beans and King Erik’s crown from the monks. Lord Roderick and the other men are unaware of Jack’s burgeoning love for Isabelle. The party soon discover that the legend of King Erik and the giants is true, and that the giants have captured Isabelle.

At the culmination of the rescue mission, one of the giants falls from the edge of the realm, down to earth, where King Brahmwell sees the body. The King orders the beanstalk to be cut down to avoid an invasion by the giants. Jack, Isabelle, and Elmont who are making their way down the beanstalk, survive the fall. The giants invade earth and Jack is tasked with saving the day, but will he rise to the occasion?

The fantasy-adventure was written by Darren Lemke, Christopher McQuarrie and Dan Studney. It was directed by Bryan Singer.
