X-Men Days of Furutre Past

Released : 05 JUNE 2014

The X-Men find themselves in a desolate future time. Those who have survived meet in a Chinese monastery in order to hatch a plan to prevent the mass slaughter of mutants and the humans that sympathise with them. They are required to send one individual back to the past to disrupt and alter the path which has led to these dystopian times.

Events were set in motion back in 1973, when a scientist called Dr Bolivar Trask created giant robots known as Sentinels. He created the Sentinels to kill mutants who, he claimed, posed an existential threat to humans. Whilst the Sentinels were intended for this purpose, they soon started killing humans too – specifically, humans who possessed the DNA to breed mutants. Eventually they started killing humans who sympathised with mutants too. Also back in 1973, Mystique killed Dr Bolivar Trask, which led to the government capturing her and harnessing her DNA. They then used this DNA to give special powers to the Sentinels.

Back in the future, Professor Xavier and Magneto concoct a plan to have Wolverine (with his regenerative powers) travel back to the year when Mystique assassinated Dr Bolivar Trask. On arrival in the past, Wolverine quickly seeks out a much younger Professor Xavier, Beast, and Quicksilver and together they emancipate a youthful Magneto from a high security prison, deep beneath the Pentagon.

Meanwhile, Mystique who is assisted by Havok, Ink, Toad, and Spike is preparing to kill Dr Trask. Wolverine, Beast, Xavier, and Magneto succeed in preventing the assassination, but Xavier and Magneto still find themselves in conflict; Magneto, enacting his privately-spun plan, induces panic at a post-Vietnam War peace summit in Paris. Trask is spared but his Sentinel programme is decommissioned and the Sentinels are eradicated from the future. Whilst Wolverine returns safely to the future, dark forces still threaten.

This is the fifth film in the main strand of X-Men movies, and the seventh in the entire series. It was directed by Bryan Singer, and the screenplay was written by Simon Kinberg.
