"What’s wrong with Brewster?” Well, at first glance all seems peaceful and idyllic in the small town of Brewster. Into this sleepy community comes a stranger called Whiley Pritcher who begins hosting a local public access call-in show called ‘Our Town’. In the show, Whiley asks listeners a simple question: “What's wrong with Brewster?"

Public Access

Released : January 1993

And the listeners respond – with a range of unexpected grievances: from scandals, to political corruption, and discrimination. Whilst the show is a hit, it also disturbs the peace in humdrum Brewster and Whiley soon takes on local celebrity status. He finds himself in the powerful role of facilitator and guardian of public opinion. As Whiley makes a pact with the mayor of Brewster, he also begins an affair with Rachel, the town librarian. She wants to leave Brewster because of its bigotry. As tensions rise, so do the suspicions of the townspeople; does Whiley have a hidden agenda? Are his motives in the spirit of anti-establishment disruptiveness, or aligned with something else completely – something sinister and more mysterious?

The screenplay was co-written by Bryan Singer, Christopher McQuarrie and Michael Feit Dougan. Singer also directed the film – his debut feature film.
