HOUSE

Released : 16 NOV 2004

Dr Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) is cynical, unconventional, and he’s a medical genius. House experiences chronic pain in his right leg and uses a cane to aid walking. This was caused years before by an infarction in his right leg, requiring dead tissue to be removed from the muscle. At the fictional Princeton-Plainsboro Teaching Hospital, he leads a team of elite diagnosticians.

In early seasons, House’s diagnostic team is comprised of Dr Robert Chase (Jesse Spencer), a cardiologist and surgeon, Dr Allison Cameron (Jennifer Morrison), an immunologist, and newest team member Dr Eric Foreman (Omar Epps), a neurologist. House’s flagrant disregard for hospital procedure plunges him into conflict with the Dean of Medicine, Dr Lisa Cuddy (Lisa Edelstein). Dr James Wilson (Robert Sean Leonard), is House’s greatest ally and friend. James is head of the Department of Oncology. Much of the dramatic tension is informed by the severe physical pain House experiences and his addiction to pain medication, which impact his character and choices.

House frequently wades into conflict with his team; his medical hypotheses are often built on seemingly controversial or shaky foundations. His irreverence towards rules and convention, combined with his profound instincts as a diagnostician, are part of his brilliance and afford him (often begrudgingly) respect from colleagues. Episodes follow the team as they strive to diagnose patients whose conditions are becoming ever more critical, with House’s epiphanic contributions often saving the day.

Throughout the early series, expect misdiagnoses, rare diseases and flouting of hospital rules, as House struggles with his addictions and physical pain. The diagnostic team disband at the close of Season 3. While Dr Forman returns to the team in the following series, House must recruit a new line-up of doctors. He settles on Dr Remy “Thirteen” Hadley (Olivia Wilde) a specialist in internal medicine, Dr Chris Taub (Peter Jacobson), a plastic surgeon, and Dr Lawrence Kutner (Kal Penn), a specialist in rehabilitative and sports medicine. As each series progresses, will House be able to unpick the mysteries of his own personal maladies as he does for so many patients?

The initial idea for the drama series originated with Paul Attanasio, with David Shore credited as the show’s creator. Shore, Attanasio, Katie Jacobs, and film director Bryan Singer are amongst the executive producers. The series ran for eight seasons on the Fox network and at its peak, House was among the top 10 shows in the United States and became the most-watched television program in the world in 2008. House received numerous accolades including five Primetime Emmy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards, a Peabody Award, and nine People’s Choice Awards.
